About Grange Insurance

Grange Insurance has its beginnings in 1893 when the Washington State Grange gathered to form an insurance association to provide fire insurance to locals. Headquarters for the insurance association was moved to Seattle in 1933, sharing a building with the Grange. In 1944 the name Grange Insurance Association was taken on, and the company moved into the auto insurance market.

The company has expanded over the years to serve several other states, and now has agents in Washington, Oregon, California, Colorado, Idaho, and Wyoming. Subsidiary Rocky Mountain Fire & Casualty was re-branded to GranWest Property & Casualty in 2016 and operates in several states.

Policies are sold through local independent agents in all of the covered states and include home insurance, auto, specialty vehicle, and packaged farm insurance.

Grange Insurance Products

Grange focuses mainly on personal lines products but also covers a variety of farms as well as wineries and orchards.

Auto Insurance

Grange offers a comprehensive auto insurance policy with all of the basic coverage as well as common options. These include liability, comprehensive coverage, and collision coverage as well as rental car reimbursement and roadside assistance.

They offer several other coverage options, including to protect a trailer or motor home, cover customizations and sound equipment, and auto loan/lease gap coverage.

The program does not appear to offer any of the trendier options in car insurance seen from major companies these days, instead relying on a solid program with a lot of common coverage choices and standard benefits that other companies may not offer except as add-ons.

Home Insurance

Grange’s standard home insurance program, HomePak Plus, includes full replacement cost for the home with an additional 25% on top of the calculated cost.

The program also includes, on top of common standard coverage, several benefits that are often found as options at other companies. These include:

The HomePak Premier plan has an even higher level of coverage than the base plan, with up to 150% replacement cost coverage.

The plan also increases refrigerated goods coverage, lock replacement coverage, and extends the coverage for personal property to include more perils. Coverage for higher value items is also increased with this policy.

In addition to single-family homes, Grange Insurance offers coverage for condos, including full replacement cost coverage for personal property along with a long list of options that can be added to the policy.

Renter’s insurance for personal property of tenants is also offered.

Farm Insurance

Farm insurance was Grange’s original product, and today they offer a variety of options.

Farm, Ranch, and Hobby Farm insurance covers a variety of operations. FarmPak is a package policy that can be tailored to the needs of each type of farm or ranch, covering things like equipment, livestock, and crops, while also covering the home and personal property of the farmer.

Grange also has a hobby farm/country estate program that is designed for a home with small, hobby operations and not income farming. This program includes coverage for specific liabilities not covered by a standard homeowner’s policy.

Orchard and Vineyard Insurance is also available to provide specialty coverage that includes liability tailored to the needs of these specific farming operations. There is also additional coverage available to pay for spoilage, contamination, and other risks.

Commercial auto insurance is available as an add-on to farm insurance policies.

Other Insurance

In addition to the main product lines, Grange also writes umbrella insurance and offers coverage for boats and other types of watercraft.

Online quoting is not available for Grange Insurance products, therefore we are unable to compare them in terms of rates.

The site does offer an agent locator search to assist with finding an agent nearby to obtain rate quotes. It is common for an agent-driven company to handle things this way, especially a smaller insurance company. That said, in the modern era we generally expect some online quoting to be available, particularly for auto insurance, for a company of this size.

In the claims department, Grange is more modern; they offer a basic online claim form which starts the process; it is not detailed but submits the initial notice of claim to get the ball rolling. The site states that the form will result in a callback within 24 hours.

There is also a 24/7 toll-free claims line that can be used at any time to report a claim.

Auto glass claims are handled through Safelite, a major glass repair company used by the biggest insurance companies in the country. There is a separate claim reporting system that goes directly to Safelite for expedited glass service.

Grange also provides preferred provider assistance for both towing and rental car services on covered claims. They do not have a preferred repair shop network, however, and the site explains that they prefer to allow customers to make their own selection and will work closely with any shop that is chosen by the insured.

The website offers all of the information needed to get a claim filed and processing, and a basic overview of the initial process.

Ratings and Consumer Reviews

Grange Insurance is not accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB), but has an A+ rating with only two complaints on file in the past three years. There have not been any reviews left of the BBB file page.

There are six reviews on Yelp for this company, with an overall rating of 1.5-stars. Most of the complaints are not from Grange customers, but from others who were involved in accidents with Grange insureds.
It is worth noting that the reviews found on Consumer Affairs for Grange Insurance are for a different company, not to be confused with Grange Insurance Association.

Overall there is a low complaint volume for this company and an overall lack of reviews that usually indicates mainly happy customers. We found nothing of concern in the reviews and generally found this company to have a good reputation.

The Bottom Line

Grange Insurance Association has some solid, comprehensive products, and they have a good reputation. For those that prefer to work with a smaller company and a local agent, they are well worth considering.
